“Sixth Hundred Eighty-Six Chapter: Water Well”
“Is this the water well from the legend of the Shui Gui in the countryside?” Xu Tian asked.
“It should be,” Liu Yifan nodded.
A water well.
In fact, it was just an abandoned well.
The mouth of the well was a circular opening, about two to three meters in diameter. The well wall was made of rough stones piled up haphazardly. There were no railings or well covers.
Standing by the well, one could look down into the darkness.
However, one could only see the darkness. No matter how good one’s eyesight was, one couldn’t see the bottom of the well.
It was eerily quiet all around.
This well was in a remote location. It was probably an old abandoned well, covered in weeds, with a strange, decaying smell emanating from it.
Could the legend of the Shui Gui be related to this well?
Liu Yifan frowned.
A water well, no matter how deep, was ultimately just a water well.
Could it be a spatial well?
A well connecting to another space?
As for the Shui Gui, could it be a creature from another space?
“I’ll go down and take a look,” Xu Tian said.
“Wait,” Liu Yifan stopped him, “It’s too dangerous. Let me go.”
“How can I let you go down when it’s dangerous? It’s better for me to go down,” Xu Tian insisted.
Liu Yifan shook his head, “You’re more important than me. It’s better for me to go.”
“What’s dangerous about a mere water well? Let’s go down together,” Xu Tian said.
Liu Yifan didn’t refuse this time.
Since he wanted to go down, he had to prepare properly.
He took out his equipment: two 1000-meter ropes, two climbing harnesses, two headlamps, two tactical knives, a locator, and some communication equipment.
“You tie the other end of the rope to a tree,” Liu Yifan instructed Xu Tian.
The surrounding area was overgrown with weeds and small trees.
Xu Tian tied one end of the rope firmly to a thick tree.
“Let’s go,” Liu Yifan said.
They both fastened their harnesses and attached themselves to the ropes. They then slowly descended into the well.
The well was very deep.
Even with a 1000-meter rope, they couldn’t touch the bottom.
They were suspended in the air, surrounded by darkness.
The air in the well was humid and carried a strange, unpleasant smell.
About two hundred meters down, they encountered something unusual.
The well wall here was no longer made of stones. It was a smooth, hard surface, like some kind of artificial material.
“What is this?” Xu Tian asked, shining his headlamp on the wall.
The light illuminated a dark, smooth surface.
It felt cold to the touch.
They continued to descend.
Another hundred meters down, they saw something even stranger.
There were carvings on the well wall.
These were not the rough carvings of ancient times, but precise, geometric patterns.
“This is not natural,” Liu Yifan said, his voice serious.
“This well seems to have been constructed by someone,” Xu Tian added.
They continued to descend, the carvings becoming more complex and intricate.
About five hundred meters down, the well opened up into a large cavern.
They were no longer in a well, but in a vast, underground space.
The cavern was illuminated by a faint, phosphorescent light that seemed to emanate from the walls.
There were strange structures in the cavern, like ancient buildings or machines.
And there were creatures.
Tall, thin creatures with long limbs and large, dark eyes.
They were the Shui Gui.
