The arrival of these two diminutive maidens furrowed Dao Yi’s brow with concern, whilst Wu Feng’s visage betrayed solemnity. The veiled meaning within their words did not escape him, for they spoke as if long acquainted with Wang Lin, and accompanied by a familiar soul.
Jiu Di, with a wry grimace, chose to disregard the chattering sprites and addressed Wang Lin.
“Wang Lin, speak your choice to this old one!”
“Egad, you stubborn codger, dare you disobey!”
“Old coot, I remember you, you were never a match for us!” The twin girls retorted, their eyes ablaze with playful ire at the venerable Grand Empyrean.
“Twins, your souls, splintered by reincarnation, yet your temperaments remain unchanged! This one has conquered seventeen trials. Now that we gather here, each shall voice their enticements, allowing him to choose his path. You…” Jiu Di commenced, but his words were abruptly cut short as the two little sprites leaped into the air.
“Han Han, let us smite them!” Cried the maiden named Wa Wa, her voice brimming with childish ferocity. As they intertwined in mid-air, a terrifying aura erupted forth.
Simultaneously, they raised their hands, forming a circle of light before them, from which bloomed a golden radiance, birthing a miniature sun!
In an instant, the golden sun consumed all other light, enveloping the Grand Empyreans within its blinding embrace.
Thunderous rumbles echoed from within the golden sphere, and Dao Yi, the first to be hurled back, his face etched with fury, fled without looking back.
Next emerged Wu Feng, a wry smile gracing his lips as he retreated from the golden light with a sigh, vanishing into the ether.
“To think, these two unruly children unleash the Nine Yang Force upon the Immortal Continent…Should this escalate…alas!”
Jiu Di, the third to be ejected, dismissed the golden radiance with a flick of his sleeve.
“Wang Lin, this old one awaits your answer upon Emperor Mountain!” He declared, his voice tinged with helplessness. He grasped Hai Zi Empyrean and vanished.
All transpired within a heartbeat. The three Grand Empyreans were forced to retreat by the seemingly unhinged antics of the twins.
As the golden light dissipated, the two maidens floated, triumphant, in the heavens.
“Little Cliff, were we not mighty? They feared to wield the Nine Yang Force, but we know no fear!”
“I knew they wouldn’t risk confrontation, scared off they were!”
The Cliff Dweller swiftly advanced, showering them with praise.
“The Twin Grand Empyreans, with their divine stratagems, leave Cliff Dweller in awe. Utter awe!” He stammered, finally comprehending that the twins possessed a method of dissuasion. This strategy, he realized, was simply chasing others away like unruly children.
The Cliff Dweller awkwardly turned to Wang Lin, clasping his hands in a formal bow.
“Cliff Dweller greets the White-Haired Sky Leaper. This… this is a regrettable necessity. Senior’s reputation precedes him, affording him many options. But the Twin Grand Empyreans are like children, pure and kind. If Senior would but follow them, he would be treated with great generosity.”
“Any request, within their power, shall be granted.” The Cliff Dweller bowed deeply.
Wang Lin, silent, glanced at the grim-faced Greed Wolf beside him, his eyes lost in thought.
“Little Cliff, why speak so much? Little Wang Lin, now that the other Grand Empyreans are gone, I ask you, will you come?” Han Han pouted, glancing sidelong at Wang Lin.
Her expression was enchanting, stirring a memory within Wang Lin’s mind of Zhou Ru as a child.
“Little Wang Lin, I remind you, we saved you! Do you remember? Remember? Hmph, if you are ungrateful, I shall strike you!” Wa Wa threatened, her eyes wide with feigned rage.
Wang Lin chuckled wryly, while the Cliff Dweller grew increasingly uncomfortable. No Sky Leaper would be lured by such uncouth recruitment, especially not one of Wang Lin’s stature.
“This… Wang Senior…” The Cliff Dweller began, attempting to smooth the situation.
Han Han huffed and drifted down, positioning herself before Wang Lin. She craned her neck, but found herself too short. She floated higher, exceeding Wang Lin’s height before raising a finger, her innocent eyes fixed on him as she issued a whispered threat.
“Little Wang Lin, if you refuse, I shall strike you! And I’ll have my papa strike you too! Cliff Dweller said my papa is powerful, and that the Ancestral Immortal and Ancient Ancestor die instantly with just one word!”
Wang Lin blinked.
“Lies, all lies…” The Cliff Dweller shuddered, realizing the blunder. He frantically sent a mental message to Wang Lin.
“Those children… the Twin Grand Empyreans speak of their two mortal fathers from their previous lives. They lack memories of that incarnation. Once, they inquired about them, and I, fearing their distress, concocted a tale. Senior, pay it no mind…”
“Ooh, Little Cliff, what are you whispering? Let me hear!” Wa Wa piped, her interest piqued. But the Cliff Dweller spoke too quickly, thwarting her eavesdropping.
“Hmph! Little Lonely Cliff, you dare defy me, to keep secrets from my ears!” the child-like deity declared, a glint of triumph in her eyes. “My father is mightier still! I shall bid him smite you!” With a giggle, she patted the brow of the ascete from Lonely Cliff.
Wang Lin, a wistful smile playing on his lips, watched the two diminutive maidens. He sighed softly, a strange feeling settling in his heart. Compared to the other Grand Celestial Sovereigns, he felt a kinship with these two that defied explanation.
Especially… Wang Lin’s gaze flickered, landing on the trembling form of Greed Wolf nearby.
*I have overlooked a crucial matter,* he mused. *Even my revered Master, Xuan Luo, could not spirit souls forth from the Cavern Realm, only shepherd them through reincarnation. Even for me, his own disciple, exiting required a sacrifice.*
*Yet this Greed Wolf, of unremarkable cultivation, was effortlessly brought forth by the Twin Grand Celestial Sovereigns!* Wang Lin inhaled deeply, his eyes tracing the forms of the two girls, particularly the gleeful Han Han. Her air of innocent authority was… captivating.
*The Twin Sovereigns, even in their disrupted reincarnation, possess such power! What then, before their tragic sundering? They must have been the mightiest of the Immortal Clan, perhaps even surpassing the sovereign of Eastern Shores…*
*And most importantly, I failed to consider this: within the Twin Sovereigns’ Violet Sun Sect lies a gateway, a nexus… a path that leads back to the Cavern Realm…*
“Hark, little Wang Lin!” Han Han exclaimed, hands on her hips. “Why do you linger in silence? Speak quickly, or I shall summon my father to teach you a lesson!”
Wang Lin chuckled again, offering a helpless glance towards the embarrassed ascete of Lonely Cliff. He nodded slowly.
“Very well,” he conceded. “I pledge my allegiance to the Twin Grand Celestial Sovereigns.”
Han Han clapped her hands, her face alight with childish glee. “Aye, that is better! Had you said so sooner, you would have spared yourself a paternal thrashing!”
Her companion chimed in, equally delighted. Now that the matter was settled, the two scampered over to the terrified Greed Wolf.
“Little Wolf, your performance was wanting today, but perhaps a little red blossom is in order!” the first chirped. “Han Han, how many shall we bestow?”
“Five, I decree!” Han Han decided. “What say you, sister?”
“Nay, six! It is a more pleasing number. Three for you, and three for me!”
The ascete of Lonely Cliff paid no mind to the two mischievous sprites and their torment of the hapless Greed Wolf, nor to the increasingly pathetic whimpers emanating from the unfortunate beast. He stared at Wang Lin, dumbfounded, scarcely believing his ears. How could Wang Lin have agreed so easily?
Though he had arrived late to this unfolding drama, he could imagine the extravagant offers presented by Dao Yi, Wu Feng, and Jiu Di. Terms that would have tempted any cultivator to their side.
“Fellow ascete,” Lonely Cliff finally managed, a touch of desperation creeping into his voice.
“However,” Wang Lin interrupted, “I have a condition. I cannot linger long within the domain of the Twin Sovereigns. I must journey to the Central Continent, and thereafter, embrace solitary seclusion. I shall seek no further worldly affairs.”
“When I depart, you must not impede my path. And should any Grand Celestial Sovereign seek to harm me in the Central Continent, you must offer me sanctuary. My service to the Twin Sovereigns may last but a few fleeting years…”
Wang Lin fixed his gaze upon the ascete of Lonely Cliff, his voice steady. “If you agree to these terms, then I offer my sword!”
“I understand now…” The ascete lowered his head, lost in thought. After a long pause, he raised his eyes, his gaze unwavering.
“Agreed! I pledge the word of the Twin Grand Celestial Sovereigns to uphold these conditions. I only implore that even in your withdrawal, even after a long absence…” But before the ascete of Lonely Cliff could voice his unspoken plea, Wang Lin cut him off.
“Of the five Grand Celestial Sovereigns of the Immortal Clan, I shall make no other choice. Only the Twin Sovereigns shall claim my fealty!” Wang Lin declared softly.
“Excellent!” A wave of relief washed over the ascete’s face, his breath returning to him. Even if Wang Lin remained only a nominal follower, it was a victory far sweeter than nothing.
After all, a being of his stature, the foremost among those who aspired to Transcendence, was unlikely to remain tethered to any one place for long.
“Esteemed one, let us return to the Violet Sun Sect. You are free to depart whenever your heart dictates, and all within our dominion is yours to explore, including the sanctum where the Twin Sovereigns meditated before their sundering. Should you desire to unravel its mysteries, the way is open to you!” Lonely Cliff bowed deeply, his reverence palpable.
“Let us go then,” Wang Lin replied, his gaze lingering on the distant silhouette of the Eastern Shores Sect. He seemed to be bidding farewell to the lone elder, who had quietly marked the years in solitude.
(From the author) Han Han is my daughter, her catchphrase being “If you don’t listen, I’ll hit you!” And also, “If you still don’t listen, I’ll get my daddy to hit you!”
So… apologies, and please forgive any unintentional resemblance!
